What is it ?
With Diabetes Mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, the risk of foot problems is significantly higher. This can lead to reduced sensation in the feet, impaired circulation, or reduced joint mobility. The result is impaired foot function, pressure spikes leading to wounds, and sometimes amputations.
The podiatrist plays an important role in both the prevention and treatment of foot problems.
For who ?
Diabetes treatment by a podiatrist is intended for people with diabetes who are at risk of foot problems, such as:
Patients suffering from reduced blood flow (peripheral arterial disease).
Patients with diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage), which can lead to reduced sensation in the feet.
Patients at increased risk of sores or pressure sores due to altered foot position or ill-fitting shoes.
Patients who have previously experienced foot problems, such as sores, infections, or a diabetic foot.
Treatments
An annual check of diabetic parameters (30 min). You are entitled to two reimbursed check-ups per year.
What exactly do we check during this examination?
Here are a few examples:
Superficial and deep sensation
Controle of the blood circulation in various places on the feet (see picture)
Checking the general condition of the feet, e.g., the skin, toe alignment, nails, etc.
Shoe advice, etc.
These are just a few examples, but the most important thing here is that we help keep everything under control. If there are any abnormalities or things known to us as red flags, we will refer you immediately so that you can be helped more quickly should there be a problem. And above all, we can try to help prevent more serious matters such as amputation. By comparing these examinations annually, we can also see whether or not the condition has remained stable.
